Snow, Number & Letter Identification, Blocks, Shaving Cream, Sleds, and the Letter K!

This week we studied winter and snow.
  • At Large Group:
    • We read both fiction and non-fiction books about Snow/Winter.

    • We brought a bin of snow into the room and used our five senses to explore and observe. We encouraged the kiddos to use their language to describe what they see, feel, smell, touch, and taste.
    • We played snowman bingo where we identified numbers and letters. We used small foam blocks to cover our cards which was great for fine motor.
We played the game twice (once with a number card and once with a letter card). We used our magnet letters to "draw".

We were really proud of how good they did with this activity.

As everyone had the same card they worked together to help each other find things.
    •  We used mitten number cards to count and then used unifix cubes to make the same number as on the card.
  • At Small Group:
    • We used patterning cards with pictures from the new Disney movie Frozen to create simple patterns and extend teacher given patterns.
    • We put together puzzles to discover pictures of polar animals, Frozen characters, and people sledding and skating.
    • We used polar animal cutouts to do a sorting activity. We sorted by size, color, and animal.
    • We used rhyming matching games to practice our rhyming skills with simple words.
  • At Choice Time:
    • We made “puffy paint” and created beautiful art creations including many inventive snow people.
We used a mixture of glue and shaving cream to create this puffy paint. The kiddos really enjoyed it!
    •  We played with our new blue Kool Aid scented play dough (tropical punch and berry punch).
They explored the cutters a lot more this week than they have in the past. They used their cutouts to create and tell stories. It was a lot of fun to watch. One day we even created the story of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" out of play dough. They helped me act it out and used their words to narrate. Then they changed the story to "Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs". ;)
    •  They worked together to build some pretty unique and interesting block structures this week. They also had imaginary train tracks that went all over the room.

Many of our kiddos enjoyed the library area. We encourage them to use the pictures to tell the story to us and their friends.
    • During our afternoon choice time on Thursday we got everyone suited up in smocks and brought out the shaving cream.
They were a little skeptical at first about even touching the shaving cream.
But once we showed them a few things they could do, they dove right in.
We practiced writing our names, shapes, letters, and numbers.

Miss Lorri made a few different snow people.

Getting silly to convince her to give it a try.

After our playdough "Goldilocks" story, they asked if we could tell the story again with the shaving cream.
Once again they helped tell the story using their own words. It is great hearing them use their growing language skills!
    •  We played outside a lot this week. We're still loving our shovels and sleds, even if some of them are broken. ;)

    • We also used our snowman measuring sticks. They loved seeing how deep in the snow the measuring sticks went. They kept telling me how many inches deep the snow was.

Our “Letter of the Week” this week was the letter ‘K’. Some of our activities include:
      • Practicing saying the sound the letter makes.
      • Seeing who has the letter in their name.
      • Identifying the letter.
      • Using white boards to practice writing the letter at large group.
      • Making our alphabet book page for each letter at small group.
      • Searching the room for things that start with the letter of the week and feeding them to the “letter monster”.
