Weather, Choice Time, Kites, Duck Duck Goose, Librarian and Paramedic Visits, and the Letter U!

· This week we studied and read books about weather.
· At Large Group:
· After reading about wind we used fans to predict which things in our classroom can be blown by wind and which things can’t. The kiddos each found one item in the room and brought it back to carpet. The took turns seeing it their item would be blown away or stay put.
· We read about volcanoes and then used vinegar and mini volcano forms filled with baking soda and red dye to create eruptions.

· We read about tornadoes and hurricanes and then experimented with swirling water and food coloring to create them.
They were all very excited when they found the "eye" of the storm.
 · We talked about the different kinds of weather and how we should dress for each kind of weather.
· At Small Group:
· We used shaving cream (clouds), food coloring (rain), droppers, and water to create rainstorms. They got so excited when the "rain" started coming out through the "clouds".

· We read the book “It Looked Like Spilt Milk” and then created our own unique cloud formations with white paint. In the story, they describe all the things clouds can look like. Once we were done with our paintings we took turns guessing what each cloud formation looked like. We will be putting them up in our hallway windows.
 · At Choice Time:
· We are still enjoying our pet store/vet dramatic play area. The kiddos have tiny scrubs to wear, vet exam tools, animal
x-rays to examine, pet food and medicine, a wash tub, books about pets and vets, and of course plenty of stuffed
animals to play with.

Playing with the "cloud" dough.

It made a huge mess, but they had a lot of fun with it.

We're still making dinosaur fossils with the play dough.
Discovery area has been THE place to go this week. There are a lot of bottles that simulate weather conditions like tornadoes.
A friend of mine donated a big bag of art supplies to us this week and the kiddos have been going crazy making things.

I think this looks like Beaker from The Muppets.
See? ;)

 · We made kites and took them outside to fly them in the wind.  You can find out how we made our kites here! Also as our sidewalk is now finally visible again we took out the sidewalk chalk and created some beautiful artwork.

  • When it was too cold to go outside we stayed inside and played the kiddos new favorite game of Duck, Duck, Goose.

  • We had a visit from a few community helpers on this week.
    • On Monday Katie the Librarian came to visit us with a bag of goodies from the Burton Memorial Library. She told the kiddos all about what the library has to offer and read us a story called "That's Good, That's Bad".

    • On Thursday we had a visit from two paramedics. They talked to the kiddos about what their job was, took the kiddos blood pressure, and took them on a walk through of their ambulance.

They even turned on the sirens for us as they drove away.
· Our letter of the week this week was U. Some of our activities include:
· Practicing saying the sound the letter makes.
· Seeing who has the letter in their name.
· Using white boards to practice writing the letter at large group.
· Searching the room for things that start with the letter of the week and feeding them to the “letter monster”.
· Making our alphabet book page for each letter at small group.
· Identifying the letter in the dry erase board sentence.
