Life Cycles!

Week of April 27-30

  • At Large Group:
    • We read stories about life cycles of a variety of animals and insects including: frogs, sharks, and butterflies.

    • We read a story called Clara the Caterpillar and worked on identifying the alliteration in the story. There were many ‘c’ words like: cute, cranky, comfy, cozy, etc.
    • We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and used cutouts from the story to tell/act out the story while we read.
    • We put on music and acted out the life cycles of chickens, butterflies, frogs, and sharks.
    • Our numbers of the week were: 1, 2, 3, & 4.  We
identify the number, write out how to spell the
number, write the number, count to the number while doing various movements, name things that are
associated with the number (like 1 nose, 2 hands, 3 little pigs, 4 leafed clover).

  • At Small Group:
    • Miss Kendra’s group used picture cards and blocks to sound out words and then build the number of syllables.
    • We used pipe cleaners (caterpillars) and leaf cutouts with holes in them to play a positional word game. We gave the kiddos directions like “put the caterpillar through the middle of the leaf then have it crawl up to the top.”
    • We used a quinoa, rotini, shells, and elbow pasta to create the life cycle of a butterfly. The kiddos also cut out leaves to put the “eggs” on.
    • Miss Katelynn’s group used frog counters to do simple addition.
    • Miss Kendra’s group used various sizes and colors of pom poms to create caterpillar patterns.
    • Miss Katelynn’s group worked on practicing their writing on lined paper like they will use next year in kindergarten.
  • Outside:
    • We have been doing lots of artwork outside this week thanks to the beautiful weather!
    • We found a baby bunny outside near our planter boxes. With the help of Miss Crystal we got it safely back to its home.
    • We also went searching for bugs.
  • At choice time this week the kiddos have been really into:
    • Playing, acting like, & drawing Pokémon.
    • Building homes for animals with the magnatiles.
    • Playing "house" and "family" in the dramatic play area.
After this they worked together to set the table, cook food, and eat together.
    • Decorating our “cars” made of out of boxes.
They push each other around the room in the box "cars".

    • Building with a variety of blocks.
    • Fishing for numbers in the water table.
    • Creating a variety of artwork.
    • Miss Christi brought in her baby chicks for us to check out.
